The CannaSun™ series from Green Works is making a strong impression within the European partnership with Beekenkamp Plants B.V. Since the first trials in spring 2024,
enthusiasm within the cultivation team has only grown. The young plants stand out for their high germination, uniform and compact growth, and fast pot-filling thanks to early shoot development (multi-stem). Together, these traits perfectly meet the needs of growers and the market.
“During the first trials, it became immediately clear that the plants germinated well andgrew uniformly. That looked very promising from the start,” says Henriette Veth, Product Specialist at Beekenkamp Plants B.V.
Beekenkamp, a long-time producer of young Canna plants, was approached by Green Works to test the new CannaSun™ genetics. In the meantime, the various varieties have been cultivated into commercial young plants. The results have been positive: both
internally at Beekenkamp and among the growers who received the starting material.
Strong cultivation characteristics: compact without PGRs
According to Beekenkamp, CannaSun™ shows clear improvements in germination rates compared to other genetics. Another important benefit: the plants stay compact without the need for growth regulators
“For production in 15 and 17 cm pots, there’s absolutely no need for PGRs (Plant Growth Regulators), which makes this series especially interesting going forward”, says Henriette Veth.
The plants develop multiple shoots early on, allowing the pot to fill out quickly. The foliage stays healthy, and the flowers rise just above the plant without excessive stretching.
Uniformity & market potential across Europe
Uniformity is a key selection criterion for Beekenkamp, both in the tray and after potting. CannaSun™ performs well in both plant size and flowering time, offering growers a
reliable foundation for production. Beekenkamp sees clear market opportunities in the Netherlands and neighboring countries, with growing interest further across Europe. Their customers have responded enthusiastically to the series and will continue trialing more varieties in the coming season.
“CannaSun™’s compact growth is a major advantage. It improves loading efficiency, which also makes it logistically attractive,” Henriette Veth adds.
The right fit for the assortment and a strong collaboration
According to Beekenkamp, CannaSun™ is a great fit within its current ornamental assortment. The decorative, flowering plant is ideal for gardens, terraces, and balconies, and fits well in a variety of sales channels, from garden centers to retail.
